Prime Small Screen Selections: 7 Essential Films This Week

Pick of the Week

The Substance Film

The filmmaker's unflinching commentary tackles the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics as well as the feared consequences of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore delivers a masterful portrayal playing Elisabeth, a mature film star reduced to presenting a fitness program on television. Edged out by her deceitful superior Harvey, she undergoes a secretive and gruesome procedure titled "The Substance". This creates a younger clone called Sue, culminating in a steadily more vampiric relationship between them. October 17th, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This classic whodunit thriller features Keira Knightley as Laura, an ace reporter who takes some time off from reporting on international wars to board an opulent ship accompanied by an ailing Norwegian shipping heiress and charitable figure, her spouse, as well as other filthy rich passengers. However when an unknown lady falls into the sea during the evening and everyone claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts awaken. Available now, the Netflix platform

This Supernatural Story

Steven Soderbergh challenges his creative boundaries with this innovative paranormal narrative shot entirely from the perspective of the phantom. When a household featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe occupies their fresh home, the filming device – AKA the Presence – follows them around. Chloe seems conscious of the supernatural presence, and it looks like guarding her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, including a revelation that could catch you off guard. October 11th, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema

This Self-Referential Film

Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image via this self-referential adventure. He acts as a self-obsessed Hollywood actor named Nicolas Cage who takes on a million-dollar gig to appear at a festive event in Mallorca for billionaire Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by government spies to spy on the potential kingpin, Cage's unconventional method comes in handy. This Saturday, evening, Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror stands strong despite the lack of a follow-up. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, a series of kidnappings has rendered the local kids anxious. After Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a basement, he dreads a fatal end. However, the non-functional line mounted nearby keeps ringing, with ghostly voices giving advice, while the intuitive nightmares from his sibling Gwen could save him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, nighttime, on Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for materialism in Showalter's delightfully tacky true story regarding the shamed televangelist and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield plays the venal Jim, who states initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye set about profiting from the people's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of tacky decor, overdone appearance and insincerity, however the lead actress achieves to present the character with compassion. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, on Film4

The Spy Mystery

This period's second offering from Steven Soderbergh is a spy mystery as sharp similar to the collars used by Fassbender's British agent. He is tasked to discover a double agent within their ranks from five suspects – among them is his spouse. Each performer are experts of calm composure, so a delicious psychological game of truth or lie unfolds. Additional actors participate the intelligent intelligence fun. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
